One thing is for sure in puerto Rico if you don't have a car you are going no where! When we got here we rented a car for 3 months with enterprise. It was a little expensive but I did not want to rush into buying a car. We realized cars are very expensive here :-( the roads and the weather tears car apart. So we had to be smart and careful and it took 3 months to finally make a move.
We wanted something that gab could use for work and that can endure through storms and road conditions. Let me tell you I have seen some pot holes that will swallow a human!! And when it rains it floods so a high car is a must. Of course since the car was used we had to do some extra fixing which was another headache.
It's not that's it's hard to find a mechanic. Everyone in puerto Rico is mechanic. Even an old lady can tell you a thing or two about cars. The hard part was finding a trust worthy one. So we talked to everyone we knew and got down to a couple of good ones. Then it was getting prices and quotes. That narrowed it down to one. Whew that was a lot!!! We HAD to celebrate once it was over with.
There are no buses and bus stops. There are no taxis. So you have to ask others to help you or you will be stuck. It's definitely something I miss from the states. So that makes it hard. I can't imagine what people, that have to money, go through when their cars break down and have to go to work.
We had 2 vehicles in the states. When one of our cars broke down the person that worked the farthest took the one person closest to work to work and then that person would take the bus home or a taxi which was not bad. But it's not like that here and if you live up a mountain or close to the beach like us it's hard to get anyone to do all that driving to take you some where. So we are working on getting another car.
But they are so expensive here!! A car from the early 2000's will cost you around $7,000-10,000 for a car that is almost 10 years old!! So when we will get another one we shall see. So always have some good savings when you move anywhere because you will be surprised at how expensive things can be.
